A barn wedding, close to home

Coton House Farm is a lovely, laid-back barn venue in Whittington, a village about three miles outside Lichfield, so this one was practically on my doorstep. It has a renovated 17th-century dairy barn for ceremonies, a big oak-framed barn for the party, covered patios, willow walks and fields all around.

Natasha and Ryan went for soft blush pink and dusty blue, with Ryan and his groomsmen in matching light blue three-piece suits. It was a warm, easy-going summer’s day, full of family, cold drinks on the patio and an acoustic singer playing while everyone caught up after the ceremony.

The willow walks made for some of my favourite portraits of the year, and as the sun went down the fairy lights came on and the whole place started to glow.

The morning

Getting ready at the farm

Natasha got ready in the farm’s preparation suite with big curls, a lot of laughs and a letter from Ryan to read before the ceremony that had her smiling from ear to ear. Her dress spent the morning hanging in the wooden gateway beneath the Coton House Farm sign. Ryan and the groomsmen were out on the patio in their blue suits, raising a pint and getting their buttonholes pinned on.

The details

Blush, rustic wood and personal touches

Long dark-wood tables with crystal glasses, dusky pink chair ties, hessian-wrapped place names and jam-jar flowers. The naked cake had peach roses and a wooden topper, and the farm’s own touches, like the bar and the horsebox, fitted right in.

The ceremony

Saying it in the old dairy barn

The ceremony was in the Old Dairy Barn, with its dark timber trusses, an aisle lined with white ribbon and a table of blush flowers at the front. Ryan was beaming the whole way through. Afterwards it was out through a wall of confetti, hugs on the patio and a big group photo on the lawn.

Just the two of you

Willow walks and golden light

We started under the wooden gateway with the “Just Married” bunting, then wandered down the willow walk, where the light comes through the leaves all soft and golden. A twirl, a lot of laughing and a few quiet moments too. Later, we went back out for a few frames under the fairy lights.

Into the evening

Cake and a packed dancefloor

Cutting the cake on an old barrel, a first dance surrounded by family, and then the dancefloor in the oak barn didn’t empty for the rest of the night.

Photos worth planning for at Coton House Farm

  1. The wooden gateway

A lovely spot to hang your dress in the morning, and for a photo of the two of you later. A bit of bunting finishes it off.

  2. The Old Dairy Barn

Dark beams and soft daylight. Lovely for the ceremony, so think about whether you’d like an unplugged ceremony so guests’ faces aren’t hidden behind phones.

  3. The covered patios

Shade in summer and plenty of space for your drinks reception. A great place for candid photos of your guests enjoying themselves.

  4. The willow walk

My favourite spot here. Soft, golden light that flatters everyone, and only a few steps away. Ideal for your couple portraits.

  5. The fairy-lit pergola

Once it’s dark, step out for five minutes. It glows and makes a beautiful last photo of the night.
